N-Type & Sleeper EP – A Short Review

Disclaimer! I’ve never actually written a music review before. Normally I attend events and on the rare occasion I might write a few words– but for some strange reason the N-Type & Sleeper EP (2021) popped onto my radar this week and I just felt compelled to write something so here it is.

So, spread across these 4 tracks sit a vast array of moods and vibes. To start with Dozer and Arcane provide a hard and heavy sound in which I would (fondly) describe as “dry stompage”; an unapologetically ignorant yet carefully constructed mess of static (and I mean that in the nicest possible way!). Industrial textures and faint whispers are used to good effect which creates a “drone-like” foundation, upon which some beloved dubstep “wobs” are skilfully yet infrequent placed. A contrast comes by way of Drift which has quickly grown to become a percy. Meditative, Deep, Spacious and Hypnotic are all words I would use to describe this journey. This one has the ability to really take an unsuspecting listener away to the mysterious corners of his or her mind.

To cap off the EP is Carbon, which is to me THE very definition of rudeness. The drifting vocal sample used here is playfully chopped and twisted to good effect. The accompanying dry static wobble which manoeuvres deviously in and out only serves to confirm this tune’s absolute lack of manners. If this tune was it child, it would have definitely been brought up by alcoholic parents.

Overall a fine cocktail of dirt, serenity and a colourful splash of very unruly behaviour!
